Listen, and let it settle

Some stories are the baggage of a whole life's youth. Some are gathered from scattered fragments of memory. They belong to people who gave their entire youth to this country —

FOR THE NATION, FOR ITS PEOPLE, FOR INDEPENDENCE.

About the project

About “lắng. . .”

“lắng. . .” exists to connect the generations of Vietnam, with two aims: to preserve the “heritage” of the country's historical memory, and to let the next generation keep writing the story of Vietnamese pride.

“lắng. . .” means slowing down — to listen to those old stories, and to let them settle, so we can connect, touch, understand, and love. When those values crystallise, they become the brightest thing a young person can carry forward, keeping the thread back to where they came from intact.

History

Are the stories made across the years, from long ago to today, the things that made our country.

Connection

Because we are one people, one countryfolk, there is always a connection and a longing to be connected

Young people and veterans standing under a tree in the grounds of the Road 9 National Martyrs' Cemetery.

Generations

Our Vietnamese history has gone through so many changes along the course of time, and so we have to connect, to draw the distance between generations closer

“Not listening to an expert analyse history, but getting to hear the person who made history tell their own story.”
“Not young people learning it by heart, but getting to ask in their own way - curious, clumsy, honest.”

The reason “lắng. . .” was begun.

The story of “lắng. . .”

The project was given its inspiration and its drive through conversations with the veterans of those years who once went to the front line and who held the home front, stories carrying the memory of a time given wholly to the country's peace. Through those conversations, through the moments of settling when we first heard those brave soldiers of that time now say, laughing as they spoke:

“When we're gone one day, will you young people remember to go in our place and light an incense stick for my comrades, my brothers?”

And naturally it was not only once that we heard sentences like that, and once the heart has remembered, the longing to begin a journey of connection grows fiercer than ever.

That veteran's worry of those years urged young people to begin, with this drive: “However many experiences and collisions one has had, it is only in getting to listen to the stories of those who came before that the depth, the living worth and the meaning of history truly become clear”.

“lắng. . .”, founded and run by young people, came into being out of a longing to understand, to connect, and to have a part in holding on to memories that are fading with time. A race against time, not because of the noise of life, but so as to hold on to the precious fragments of our nation's history.

“lắng. . .” films a podcast series

One form of connecting the generations and keeping the stories held in memory that “lắng. . .” is carrying out is filming and producing podcast episodes. There the young people and the older men and women talk together, the one carrying the memory of before telling it again, the one carrying the curiosity listening.

The two main pillars of the podcast's content are as follows:

An elderly woman and a young man sitting talking together indoors.

Our own family's story

The old stories handed over today will go on living and be told again by the generation of children and grandchildren afterwards.

Two young people looking over old documents and photographs with a veteran.

Meeting the person of that time

The journey of young people coming to hear the stories from those out of history whom they had never met before.

“lắng. . .” comes to visit

“lắng. . .” and the Check-in Vietnam map campaign. It is perhaps not the first time we have dropped by, but it is the first time we dropped by with the wish to come, to visit and to give thanks. It is an act from within, with a longing to come to the place where an important memory of our people is held.

Walking alongside the project

We, the young ones, today begin a new race - a race against time to hold on to the memories of our country.

We want to seek out the people who gave their whole youth to joining the rivers and mountains together, to listen to and keep the stories of history before they sink into forgetting.

But time waits for no one, and our strength has its limits.

For this journey to go further, we very much need the community's joined hands. Every word of encouragement, every share or contribution is a source of strength for us to reach more regions, record more stories and hand those priceless memories on to the generation to come.

Commitment on the use of contributions

100% of financial contributions from the community will be used for the project's activities, including but not limited to:

  • Filming podcasts and keeping the stories of history.
  • Holding events and activities that connect the community.
  • Research, travel and delivery of the project.
  • Spreading the worth of history and culture to the young generation.

The whole of the funding received and spent will be gathered and made public transparently in a financial report at the end of each quarter, so that the community can follow and walk alongside the project clearly and with trust.
